Meet Marcus

My name is Marcus Christian Rather, and I am a financial adviser. My story begins being born and raised in Hampton, VA by two wonderful and loving parents, Melvin C. Rather and Regina M. Rather. I’m the youngest son of two “big-headed” boys, with my older brother being Melvin C. Rather Jr. My brother and I are the products of two parents who made decisions and sacrifices for our well-being and opportunities for us to succeed.

At our firm, we have the client—and only the client—in mind.

I chose a career in financial services, initially, because of a connection made to my Boys State Counselor during my experience at Virginia Boys State of the American Legion. At that time, my then co-counselor was in school pursuing a career as a Financial Planner. During one of our many long conversations, he took the time to tell me about the career, how it was a career that involved interacting with people daily and advising them on their personal financial decisions. At that time in my life, I knew I wanted a career that didn’t limit me to a desk or behind a computer, but a career that involved me actively engaging with people and the freedom to meet people wherever they were. So, following that conversation, I decided that I was going to further my education in the pursuit of becoming a financial planner.

The second catalyst to my journey came during my freshman year of college at VCU. During one, of the many, VCU School of Business Fairs, I had the pleasure of meeting my college mentor John McFarland. Mr. McFarland shook my hand and told me about the benefits of working as an independent financial planner, being able to build a financial practice that granted me the freedom to control my schedule, provide a lifestyle for a family, and help people. He clearly was good at what he did because it didn’t take much to convince me to pursue this career further.

I'm a graduate of Phoebus High School c/o 2012 where I played football for the 4 x State Champion Phoebus Phantoms. Upon graduation of high school I pursued my college degree at Virginia Commonwealth University (V.C.U! Go Rams Go!) I graduated from VCU c/o 2016 with my B.S. Finance, concentration of Risk Management & Insurance. During my time at VCU I pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 2015. Upon graduation I embarked upon my financial services career with Foresters Financial Services as a licensed financial representative. In 2019, Foresters Financial and Cetera Financial Group agreed upon an acquisition which led to what is now known as Cetera Investors.

Outside of work I find balance in participating in my hobbies. I enjoy playing basketball, football, baseball / softball, bowling, soccer, dodgeball, swimming, etc. I am a HUGE Pittsburgh Steelers fan, the greatest Franchise in NFL History! I enjoy working out and maintaining good physical health. Aside from playing sports I enjoy watching sports and other television shows. My favorite shows of all time are The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Office, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Blacklist, and Abbott Elementary.
